Avoiding mosquito bites!

A mosquito feeding!

Over the years we have suffered, like so many, with being bitten by mosquitos. It is annoying and painful. It is also so frustrating trying to sleep when one of the little blighters are buzzing around your bedroom!

We seem to have found a strategy that works for us in preventing them getting in to our bedroom and also biting us when we're out and about. It is not foolproof and we still get the occasional bite.

Plug-In Mosquito Repellants

We always use plug-in mosquito repellants, one in the main living area of our villa and one in each bedroom. We turn these on at about 5pm. If you want to go on holiday prepared, the Jungle Formula 2-pin Plug-in Mosquito Repellant available at Boots is a good option. There are also a 3-pin options for the UK, Cyprus etc.

If you don't want these taking up your baggage allowance, you can buy these in Lidl across Europe. The Teza brand is a good option.

Insect Repellant Spray

We have used many different brands over the years, but find the Jungle Formula Maximum Aerosol Insect Repellent is very goodand available at Boots.

Again, this can be bought when you are holiday. We found the Autan brand at Lidl very good, especially the Soft Spray Family Care version (seen on the bottom row of this photograph).

Mosquito Coils

If we are sitting outside in the evening, we ALWAYS light a mosquito coil. Usually positioning it between us or under the table we are sitting at.

These are readily available at home and abroad, though we have found them considerably cheaper when bought abroad. They can be bought from Amazon.

Don't forget you need a lighter or matches to get them going!

Other Advice

Even during the day, we try to keep doors and windows closed of our villa or apartment. If there are insect screens, always keep them closed.

Wearing long-sleeved tops and full length trousers is an option as well. Though we find the mosquito spray stops us getting bitten even with legs and arms exposed.

I was once bitten in the early morning in Spain. Don't foget these little blighters are still active early in the morning.
