Our latest visit was in May 2023
Fiscardo is a beautiful port village at the north of Kefalonia. We have visited many times, either as a day trip from elsewhere on Kefalonia or staying in Fiscardo itself.
It is the perfect place to relax, soak up the atmosphere and people watch, either with a iced frappé or a chilled glass of white wine!
1. Watch the 'anchor chain wars' every morning whilst having coffee
When the yachts moor in the evening in Fiscardo, their anchor chains cross over one another’s. When a yacht tries to leave in the morning, it cannot get out if it‘s anchor chain is underneath another one. It is interesting (amusing!) to see them leave in the morning having to untangle them all and sometimes involves someone donning a snorkel and diving in to untangle them by hand!
After a morning stroll, have a mid-morning coffee watching the activity on the water.
2. People watching with a cocktail in Theodora’s
Theodora's is a wonderful cocktail bar and cafe right at the water's edge in Fiscardo. They open mid-afternoon, but it is a great place to start the evening with a pre-dinner drink on one of the two balconies. It really is a great place for people watching.
3. A stroll around the Fiscardo lighthouses
A gentle 30-45 minute circular walk takes you through some lovely, shaded pines to a couple of lighthouses, one venetian and one modern. Then amble back to the port for a drink.
4. Sunset bar for a swim and a beer
If you have a car (or use a taxi), take the 15 minute drive to Alaties Beach. This is a gorgeous small cove with crystal clear waters, ideal for a swim, snorkel or sunbathing. Immedialtely behind the beach is the wonderful Alati Bar & Restaurant; this is a lovely place for a cool drink and maybe some food. Oh, and the sunsets are amazing from here!
If you are taking a taxi, Fiskardo Transfers is opposite Domoulas Supermarket.
5. Where to eat?!
One of our favourite restaurants in Fiscardo is Captains's Cabin. They do lovely pizzas and salads, as well as the more usual Greek fare.
If you fancy something a bit different, Irida's is without doubt the place to go. The food is excellent, the menu is mouthwatering and some of the dishes are a bit different. Our favourite dishes are black squid ink risotto and filet of sole stuffed with prawns and champagne sauce!
Another good option, especially for lunch, is Nicolas Taverna. This is a great spot for lunch when the crowds arrive on the ferry from Lefkas. The taverna overlooks the hustle and bustle of the main port area. Food is good, beer is cold and the views are wonderful.
6. Where to stay?
There is the Emilesse Resort just outside Fiscardo; it looks lovely though we have not stayed there. However, we recommend staying in a villa with a view! We have stayed at Martini Waterfront Suites, a collection of small villas, perfect for a romantic getaway. Our favourite is Fiscardo View Villas, a lovely collection of three private villas. Jasmine is at the top, Lavender the middle and Rosemary is the lower one. We have stayed in both Lavender and Jasmine and have been extremely well looked after by the owner. We booked our Fiscardo View Villa and Martini Waterfront Suite through Booking.com which made the process very easy. We have also stayed in a lovely villa a couple of miles outside Fiscardo booked through Vintage Travel.
7. Stroll to Foki Beach
A gentle 30 minute stroll along the water's edge from Fiscardo is Foki Beach. This is the closest beach to Fiscardo; Emilsee Beach (in the other direction) is a bit further away and not such a nice walk.
The walk to Foki Beach shows off several different aspect of Fiscardo, all beautiful! There is a taverna at Foki, good for a break from the beach.
8. Fro-Yo shop
In Fiscardo is a lovely frozen yoghurt and ice cream shop, Dodoni. The fro-yo is a joy on a hot day, though just be aware it is sold by weight, so take care with the number of toppings you add!
9. Shop at Lidl!
If you have a hire car, we would advise you stock up on provisions before heading to Fiscardo. There are a couple of supermarkets in Fiscardo, but they are a bit pricey as they have a captive audience of the yachties. There is a convenient Lidl about 15 minutes drive from the airport. We usually land just after lunch, so a hot cheese pie and a cold drink (beer for the non-driver) in the car park keeps the stomach runbles away until dinner in Fiscardo!
